FameLab is a national competition to discover the new faces of UK science and engineering. Dubbed Boff Idol' by the Daily Telegraph, it's the brainchild of the Cheltenham Science Festival and NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts). More information can be found at www.famelab.org.

Entrants have just three minutes to bring science alive to an adult audience. Judges will select ten finalists to compete for £2000, the opportunity to pitch TV ideas to Channel 4, and a tour of live events.

In 2005 Dr Mark Lewney's 'electrifying' performance on the physics of rock music won over judges and audience to make him the first ever winner of FameLab. Mark has since embarked on a series of events and media appearances including a project in development with Channel 4. FameLab opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me. I realised I just needed to get off my backside and have a go, from talking to all kinds of audiences, to writing, presenting and collaboration,' said Mark.

FameLab is open to anyone over the age of 21 working in science or technology. All you need to do is turn up at one of the auditions, but if you register your interest at www.famelab.org you will get further details and updates as the competition progresses.

See www.famelab.org for entry criteria, details of all the regional heats and to register for updates.
