How do you label the people around you? We tend to take people's gender for granted, but how flexible can 'male' and 'female' be? Ingo Andersson from the transgender community will explore gender with a categories quiz to get us thinking about the classic conventions we use to classify everyone. Why do we do it? Reflect on where you fit in' and where you don't.

Discover the science behind gender. What role do chromosomes, genes and hormones play in determining gender? Can parents affect their child's gender? Polly Carmichael's experience of working with intersex and transsexual children, adolescents and their parents gives insight into the tough topic of gender assignment. Vickie Pasterski will look at the effect of hormones in the prenatal environment on gender, and the role parents play. Josephine Wilson will then highlight some of the different gender perspectives existing in society that create problems for science, and the everyday experience of transgender folk.

Is anyone ever outside a box? Will the boxes ever end? Come and discuss.
