Join Dinner@Dana as we begin a season of extreme science. Explore the limits of human endurance with scientists and survivors who work in some of the toughest conditions on the planet.

This month we are joined by Dan Martin from Xtreme Everest, a team of mountaineering medics who climb Mount Everest to study our bodies at the limits of endurance. They're studying over 200 volunteers in special labs on the route to base camp, but for the final climb they’ll also be turning the tests on themselves. The plan is to make the first ever measurements of blood oxygen in the 'death zone' at altitudes above 8000 metres, where the human body has struggled – and frequently failed – to survive.

Hear more about their extreme experiments and find out how the world's highest lab may help treat critically ill patients back home. Tuck into a hearty meal that will satisfy any extreme mountaineers!

If you can't make it to this Dinner@Dana check out our upcoming event, Extreme Science: Life in the Deepfreeze on 12 December.

Dinner@Dana is part of the Café Scientifique network. Meetings aim to stay outside of the traditional academic context by creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere in which to discuss scientific issues. These Cafés provide a place for everyone to explore the latest ideas in science, technology and medicine.
