Hold onto that holiday feeling for just a bit longer with Ah… the Sea, a 3D seaside soundscape. Award-winning multimedia artists Braunarts have specially created the installation as part of our ‘5 Senses’ series of evening events.

Running for one week only, Ah… the Sea is based in the Dana Centre’s first-floor Studio and is open to the public from Monday 17 to Friday 21 September. Pop in during your lunch break or drop by after work. Tickets are free but booking is advised; group entries are limited to ten per visit.

Come along and step inside - hear how the soundscape stretches a traditional British seaside scene around you. Walk through the space and hear how your perspective on the scene being played out shifts around you.

Using the joystick you can spin, rotate, expand, contract and even invert the soundscape. Push, pull and stretch the sounds to their limits while you enjoy the sophisticated 12-speaker 3D surround sound system. How will the sounds come out? How realistic are they? Can you really believe you’re by the seaside?

Ah... the Sea has been conceived and produced by the BAFTA award-winning team of Gabi and Terry Braun of Braunarts, who are passionate about exploring the unique creative potential of digital media. They have a long history of creating work looking at the overlap and interrelationships between the arts and science. Ah… the Sea uses a new and improved variation on the technology they used to create The Dark, which premiered at the Dana Centre in 2004.

Gabi’s fascination with how people listen is reflected in a range of recent TV and multimedia works. She has also worked across many musical sound-design projects, including commissions for the American Symphony Orchestra League and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Terry is an award-winning TV and multimedia producer, with over 20 years’ experience directing and producing for TV. His wide range of television work includes music videos, arts films on subjects from contemporary dance to the Turner Prize, and documentaries across history, culture and science, primarily for Channel 4 and the BBC. Terry received an honorary fellowship from the Royal Society of the Arts, is a NESTA Dream Time Fellow and a member of BAFTA and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

A tie-in evening event on ‘Sound’ on Tuesday 18 September will offer the chance to meet the artists and the audio engineers they work with. You can ask questions on how they created Ah… the Sea and explore the possibilities of surround sound with a range of other acoustic experts.
