Give your MP3 player a break this evening and join Dinner@Dana to experience a little science with your music. Martin Rohrmeier, a researcher in music and language cognition, will explore the science behind our everyday listening experiences.
Music can have enormous power over our senses – just close your eyes and it can take you on an evocative journey. As music lovers know, appreciating music can be an emotional experience. How can mere notes create sensations of tension or release in our perception? Why do some passages build up expectations? How can music surprise us? And why do we recognise the style of a piece within seconds?
Explore these questions and enhance your musicology with live musical explanations.
This evening consists of a talk and a discussion session, interspersed with a two-course dinner (available to purchase in the d.café). Dinner@Dana is part of the Café Scientifique network. Meetings aim to stay out of a traditional academic context by creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere for everyone to explore the latest ideas in science, technology and medicine.
