Richard Fortey, palaeontologist and bestselling science writer, shares his passion for trilobites. The fossil record shows that these creatures emerged some 540 million years ago and survived 300 million years of evolution, dominating the world’s oceans long before the time of the dinosaurs. Their remains have become invaluable tools for calibrating geological time, and can help explore tectonic plate movements and the mechanisms of evolution.
After a lengthy career at the Natural History Museum, Professor Fortey is well known as a world authority on trilobites, as well as being a successful popular science writer. His latest book, Dry Store Room No. 1, takes us behind the scenes to reveal the secret life of the Natural History Museum and its collections. This is a rare opportunity to see one of Britain’s most successful scientists speak about a subject he has devoted his career to.
