There is a fierce battle being waged by governments against the web for the hearts and minds of their citizenry. It’s always been a place of free speech, and authority has struggled to restrict or counteract the distribution of information that potentially harms the State.

But some governments are trying to control or even stop online information spreading. By waging a web war against detractors they are using the power of disinformation and propaganda to win back the hearts, minds and allegiances of their populations.

Join Kevin Anderson, political correspondent from The Guardian, Terry Pattar, Associate with Jane's Strategic Advisory Services, and Professor Phil Taylor of the Institute of Communication Studies at the University of Leeds, for a long view of how the web is being used in new ways to get us to do its bidding.
